Thyroid gland – foods to avoid

If you suspect a thyroid imbalance, especially under activity, the following foods are best omitted for a while to assess their effect. They are known to hinder iodine utilisation by the thyroid gland or, in the case of wheat, to cause an auto-immune response.

  • wheat – and all wheat-based products and derivatives
  • white/red cabbage
  • kale
  • Brussels sprouts
  • broccoli
  • Cauliflower
  • green peppers
  • tomatoes
  • chillies
  • kohlrabi
  • turnips
  • dairy foods
  • peanuts
  • soup bouillon
